Are Solar Panels Worth It in Barnsley? The 2026 Numbers

AMP Pro Electrical

The real 2026 numbers for Barnsley homes: what a 4kW system costs, what it generates in South Yorkshire, how the March SEG cut changed the maths, and when a battery makes the difference.

If you're weighing up solar in Barnsley, it tends to come down to one question: with export rates falling and energy prices still high, do the panels actually stack up in 2026? The short answer is yes for most homes — but the maths shifted when Octopus cut its export rate in March, and the return now depends more than ever on how much of your own power you use. Below are the real numbers we quote for homes in Wombwell, Hoyland, Dodworth and the rest of the borough. Our solar panels Barnsley page covers the installation service itself; this post is purely the sums.

What Solar Costs in Barnsley in 2026

For a typical three-bed semi, a 4kW system costs £6,500–£8,500 fully installed. A smaller 3kW system runs £5,000–£6,000, and a larger 5kW system £8,000–£10,000. Those are fully installed prices, and we handle the Northern Powergrid paperwork as part of the job — G98 notification for standard systems, a G99 application before installation for bigger ones.

Two caveats, as always. Every roof is different, so we fix the price in writing after a free survey. And solar and battery installations are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, when the rate reverts to 5% — worth factoring into your timing.

What a 4kW System Generates Here

South Yorkshire gets around 1,380 sunshine hours a year, which puts a well-sited 4kW array at roughly 3,300–3,700kWh annually. On paper that covers a large share of a typical household's usage. In practice it doesn't work like that, because solar generates in the middle of the day and most families use their electricity in the evening.

That mismatch is the most important number in the whole calculation: on a solar-only system, most homes self-consume only around 35% of what they generate. The rest is exported.

The Export Reality After the Octopus Cut

This is what changed in 2026. On 1 March, Octopus cut its Outgoing rate from 15p to 12p per kWh. Good Energy still pays around 15p on its standalone tariff and E.ON Next around 16.5p bundled with an import tariff, so it genuinely pays to shop around — but the direction of travel is down.

Meanwhile, a unit you use at home avoids roughly 26p of import cost. In plain terms, self-consumed solar is worth about twice as much as exported solar. That one ratio explains why battery storage has moved from a nice-to-have to the first thing we discuss on most surveys.

What a Battery Changes

Adding storage typically lifts self-consumption from around 35% to 75–90%: the battery charges from your panels through the day and runs the house through the evening.

Barnsley's housing stock maps onto battery sizes fairly neatly. The ex-mining semis and terraces around Wombwell, Hoyland and Ardsley generally suit a 5–10kWh battery (£3,500–£7,500 fitted on its own), while larger homes in Dodworth and Silkstone with heavier evening usage justify 10–13.5kWh. A combined solar-plus-battery package runs £11,000–£14,000 installed. We fit Tesla Powerwall, Fox ESS, EcoFlow and Sigenergy, and we size the battery from your actual usage, not a brochure. There's more detail on our battery storage in Barnsley page.

The Payback Maths

Put together, a properly sized system in Barnsley typically pays for itself in 7–9 years, and the equipment is designed to keep working long after that.

The honest caveats: payback depends on your usage pattern, roof orientation and what energy prices do next, so treat any figure quoted to the month with suspicion. What we do instead is model it from your actual bills at the survey stage, so the estimate is yours rather than a national average. And if spreading the cost makes the difference, our solar finance options page sets out the routes available.

The Zero 45 Context

Barnsley Council's Zero 45 strategy commits the borough to net zero by 2045, and household solar is one of the few parts of that a homeowner can simply get on with. Helpfully, rooftop solar counts as permitted development on most homes, so there's usually no planning application — listed buildings still need listed building consent; in conservation areas, roof-slope panels are now permitted development under the updated 2026 rules — it is wall-mounted panels fronting the street and flat-roof systems that need prior approval, and we check this for you before quoting, which we'll flag at survey if they apply to you.

So — Are They Worth It?

For most Barnsley homes with a reasonable roof: yes. The strongest case in 2026 is solar plus a right-sized battery, installed while the 0% VAT window is open, with your export tariff chosen deliberately rather than left on a default. The weakest case is an oversized solar-only array on a house that sits empty all day, exporting cheap units back to the grid.
