Free Solar Panels in Rotherham? What's Actually Available in 2026

Search for solar panels in Rotherham and you'll still find adverts promising them free. Some describe a scheme that has closed; others oversell one that is still running but rarely pays for solar. Here's what's genuinely available in 2026, who might qualify, and how to tell a real offer from a sales pitch. ECO4: still running until 31 December 2026

ECO4, the Energy Company Obligation scheme funded by energy suppliers, was due to end in March 2026 but has been extended to 31 December 2026. It is for low-income households — typically those receiving qualifying benefits, or referred through the council's LA Flex route — in homes with a poor EPC rating, and it only pays for solar panels where the whole-house assessment calls for them, typically in electrically heated or off-gas homes. Places depend on installers and supplier funding, and the scheme ends this year.

The scheme that has closed

• **The Great British Insulation Scheme** closed to new installations in March 2026 — Rotherham Council's own page confirms it is no longer taking new applications.

If a company offers free solar "through ECO4", ask how your home qualifies under the whole-house assessment and which supplier is funding it, and get it in writing.

What's still available

Warm Homes: Local Grant. This is the government scheme councils now deliver for lower-income households. To be eligible, your home must be in England, privately owned (by you or your landlord) and have an EPC rating of D, E, F or G, and your household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less, or you must receive certain benefits. If you're eligible and your council has funding, it arranges a survey and pays for the improvements it agrees with you, which can include solar panels. Funding depends on the council and the funding round, so check with Rotherham Council or apply through GOV.UK before committing to anything.

0% VAT. Solar panels and batteries installed in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate returns to 5%.

The Smart Export Guarantee. Once your system is registered, energy suppliers pay you for the electricity you export — 12p per kWh on Octopus's standard Outgoing tariff, with some suppliers paying more. Using your solar power yourself is still worth roughly twice as much as exporting it.

If you don't qualify for a grant

For most Rotherham homeowners, solar is self-funded — and it still works. A typical 4kW system for a three-bed home costs around £6,500–£8,500 fully installed with 0% VAT, generates roughly 3,300–3,800 kWh a year and pays back in about 7 to 9 years. Adding a battery raises the saving further by letting you use more of what you generate.

How to spot a misleading offer

• **"Free" with strings attached:** some offers are finance agreements or roof-lease deals with long contracts. Read the paperwork before signing.
• **Unsolicited calls or door-knocking** that name a government scheme: check the scheme name with the council directly before giving any details.
• **No MCS certificate mentioned:** without an MCS-certified installation you can't claim Smart Export Guarantee payments.
• **Pressure to sign today.**
