How Long Does Solar Panel Installation Take in Doncaster?
The panels go up in one to two days — but from first enquiry to a signed-off, generating system, allow around three weeks. Here's what fills the time, and when G99 approval stretches it.
Ask around and you'll hear that solar panels "go up in a day". That's broadly true — and also not the answer you actually need if you're planning around scaffolding on the drive, a day off work, or a switch-on date before winter.
So here's the honest timeline. The panels themselves take one to two days to install. But from your first enquiry to a fully signed-off, generating system, allow around three weeks. We carry out solar panel installation in Doncaster from our base in Armthorpe, so what follows is the process exactly as we run it — including the stages people don't see coming.
The short answer
- **On the roof:** one to two days for a typical home system
- **End to end:** roughly three weeks from survey to final certificates
- **The exception:** larger systems that need G99 approval before installation — these can add several weeks (more below)
What fills the three weeks
Days 1–5: survey and fixed quote
Everything starts with a free survey. We measure the roof, check its orientation and any shading, look at your fuse board and meter arrangement, and talk through how you actually use electricity — that last part decides whether a battery makes sense. You then get a fixed written quote. For a typical 4kW system that's usually £6,500–£8,500 fully installed at 0% VAT (the zero rate runs until 31 March 2027), with the exact figure fixed in writing after the survey, not estimated over the phone.
Week two: scaffold, kit and paperwork
Once you accept the quote, three things happen in parallel. We order your panels, inverter and any battery. We book the scaffold — putting it up takes less than a day, but scaffolders get booked ahead, so this is often the pacing item. And we sort the DNO paperwork. The network operator for Doncaster is Northern Powergrid, and most home systems — up to 16A (3.68kW) per phase — fall under G98, a notification we submit after the install rather than an application before it. Either way, we handle it; you don't fill in anything.
Install days: one to two days on the roof
Installation day itself is the quick bit. The roofing team fits the mounting rails and panels and runs the DC cabling; the electrical side — inverter, isolators, AC connection and any battery — happens alongside. A straightforward panel-only system is usually done in a day; a solar-and-battery package typically takes two. Before we leave, we commission the system, test everything and set up the monitoring app so you can watch it generate.
The final week: scaffold down and certificates
The scaffold comes down a few days after the install, depending on the scaffolder's schedule. Meanwhile we issue the paperwork that makes the system official: your MCS certificate, electrical certification, DNO confirmation and warranty documents. The MCS certificate matters most — you need it to register for Smart Export Guarantee payments on the electricity you export. Once it arrives, typically within days of commissioning, you can apply to an export tariff straight away.
When it takes longer: G99 systems
If your inverter output exceeds 3.68kW per phase — common with larger arrays or some battery setups — the rules change. Instead of notifying Northern Powergrid afterwards, we must apply for G99 approval before installing anything, and the DNO's response can take several weeks. It's the single biggest variable in any solar timeline. Our approach is to submit the application the moment you accept the quote, so the waiting runs alongside the kit ordering rather than after it — but on a G99 job, expect the end-to-end timeline to stretch well past three weeks.
Two smaller caveats: rooftop solar is permitted development on most Doncaster homes, but listed buildings still need listed building consent; in conservation areas, roof-slope panels are now permitted development under the updated 2026 rules — it is wall-mounted panels fronting the street and flat-roof systems that need prior approval, and we check this for you before quoting, which adds its own weeks. And while rain doesn't stop an install, high winds can pause roof work for a day.
How to keep your install on schedule
- Have a recent electricity bill to hand at the survey — it speeds up system sizing
- Decide on the battery question early; changing the spec after the DNO paperwork goes in means restarting it
- If you're considering an EV charger installation too, tell us at the survey — fitting it during the same electrical works is quicker and cheaper than a separate visit
