What to Do When Your Electricity Trips: A Doncaster Electrician's Guide

When the Power Suddenly Goes Off
The lights die, the TV cuts out, and you are stood in the dark wondering what just happened. It is unsettling — but in most cases a tripped supply is your electrical system doing exactly what it is designed to do: protecting you and your property from a fault. The trick is knowing how to respond calmly, what is safe to check yourself, and when to stop and call a qualified electrician.
This guide walks you through it step by step. It is written for homeowners and tenants across Doncaster, Armthorpe and the wider DN postcodes, but the principles apply anywhere in the UK because they follow the wiring rules set out in BS 7671, the 18th Edition standard every registered electrician works to.
Step One: Is It Just You, or the Whole Street?
Before you touch anything, look outside. This single check saves a lot of wasted effort.
- **Look at your neighbours' houses and the street lights.** If their lights are off too, the problem is almost certainly on the network side, not inside your home.
- **Check whether nearby homes still have power.** If yours is the only dark house, the fault is within your own installation.

During a network power cut, switch off and unplug sensitive electronics (computers, TVs, the boiler) to protect them from any surge when supply returns, and leave one light switched on so you know the moment it comes back.
Step Two: Find Your Consumer Unit (Fuse Board)
If the rest of the street has power and only your home is dark, the fault is inside your installation and your consumer unit will tell you the story. This is the grey or white box, usually near the front door, under the stairs, in a hallway cupboard or in the garage.
Open the cover and look at the switches. A modern board has:
- A large **main switch** that isolates the whole supply.
- One or more **RCDs (residual current devices)** or **RCBOs**, which detect dangerous earth faults and cut power in a fraction of a second to protect you from electric shock.
- A row of smaller **circuit breakers (MCBs)**, each protecting one circuit — upstairs sockets, downstairs lights, the cooker, and so on.
A switch that has tripped will be sitting in the OFF position (or halfway) while the others stay ON. That tells you which protective device has operated and, often, which circuit caused it.
Step Three: Try a Safe Reset
If a breaker or RCD has tripped, you can safely attempt one reset:
1. Unplug or switch off the appliance you were using when the power went. Kettles, toasters, irons, washing machines, vacuum cleaners and older extension leads are the usual culprits. 2. Push the tripped switch firmly back up to ON. With an RCD you may need to push it fully down first, then up. 3. See whether it holds.
If it stays on and the power returns, the fault was probably the appliance you unplugged. Leave that item unplugged and have it checked or replaced before using it again.
Only attempt this reset once. If the switch trips straight back, or refuses to stay up, stop. Repeatedly forcing a protective device to reset on a live fault is dangerous and can mask a genuine hazard. A device that will not reset is telling you there is a fault that needs tracing properly.
Step Four: Narrow Down the Circuit (RCD Won't Reset)
When an RCD covers several circuits and trips the moment you reset it, a faulty appliance somewhere on those circuits is usually holding it down. You can often isolate it:
1. Turn off every individual MCB protected by that RCD. 2. Reset the RCD — it should now stay on because nothing is drawing power. 3. Switch the MCBs back on one at a time, pausing after each. 4. When the RCD trips again, the last circuit you switched on is the one with the fault.
Leave that circuit off and use the rest of the house normally until an electrician can investigate. This is a safe diagnostic step because you are never overriding the protection — you are letting it do its job while you find the source.

When to Stop and Call an Electrician
Some situations are not a job for trial and error. Call a professional straight away — and treat these as urgent — if you notice any of the following:
- A **burning smell, scorch marks, or melted plastic** around sockets, switches or the consumer unit.
- **Buzzing, crackling or sparking** from any electrical accessory.
- The board trips again **the instant** you reset it, with nothing plugged in.
- **Water involvement** — a leak above the fuse board, a flooded socket, or a trip during heavy rain.
- Any sockets, switches or cables that are **warm or hot** to the touch.
- The trip followed a **DIY job, a new appliance, or building work**.
