Octopus Intelligent EV Charging: How It Works and Is It Worth It?

Amppro Electrical

A complete explanation of Octopus Intelligent EV charging — how the tariff works, which chargers are compatible, how much you can save, and what to expect.

Octopus Intelligent is widely regarded as the best EV charging tariff available in the UK. If you own an EV and charge at home, it is almost certainly worth switching to — but it works differently from a standard electricity tariff and requires some setup.

What Is Octopus Intelligent?

Octopus Intelligent is a time-of-use electricity tariff that automatically schedules your EV's charging during the cheapest overnight periods.

  • **Cheap rate (overnight intelligent slots):** Approximately 7p per kWh
  • **Standard rate (all other times):** Approximately 24p per kWh

Unlike a fixed cheap-window tariff, Octopus Intelligent actively communicates with your vehicle or EV charger to dispatch charging during optimal overnight slots. This runs automatically — you set your departure time and minimum charge level, and Octopus handles the rest.

How Much Can You Save?

For a driver covering 10,000 miles per year at 4 miles per kWh:

  • At standard rate (24p): £600 per year
  • At Octopus Intelligent overnight rate (7p): £175 per year
  • **Annual saving: £425 per year**

Compared to public rapid charging at 50p to 85p per kWh, the annual saving from home charging is £1,075 to £1,950.

Which EVs and Chargers Are Compatible?

OTA-compatible vehicles (managed via the car itself): Tesla, Volkswagen Group, Polestar, Volvo, Kia, Hyundai, BMW, Mini.

For non-OTA vehicles — Ohme Home Pro: Communicates directly with the Octopus API to schedule dispatch even without native vehicle integration. This is the best charger for Octopus Intelligent if your vehicle is not on the OTA list.

Zappi: Works well for OTA-compatible vehicles on Octopus Intelligent. For non-OTA vehicles, relies on vehicle or app scheduling rather than direct charger dispatch.

Hypervolt and Easee: Better suited to the simpler Octopus Go tariff (fixed cheap window) than Octopus Intelligent's dynamic dispatch.

Octopus Intelligent vs Octopus Go

Octopus Intelligent: Dynamic dispatch, whole household benefits from cheap rate during dispatched periods. Best for OTA-compatible vehicles or Ohme charger users.

Octopus Go: Fixed 6-hour cheap overnight window at approximately 7p to 9p. Works with any charger via a simple timer. Simpler but nearly as effective.

For most EV owners in 2026, Octopus Intelligent is the better choice if your vehicle or charger is compatible. If not, Octopus Go is a close second.
