What Is the Tesla Powerwall 3?
The Powerwall 3 is Tesla's current home battery for the UK, and it is a different animal from most of the batteries on our battery storage page. Rather than being a battery that hangs off a separate inverter, it is a fully integrated hybrid system: the solar inverter, battery inverter and 13.5kWh of usable storage all live in one weatherproof unit. For a new solar panel installation that means fewer boxes on the wall, fewer points of failure, and a claimed 97.5% efficiency getting solar power into your home.
The headline that sets it apart is power. Most home batteries discharge at 3.6–6kW. The Powerwall 3 can be configured for up to 11.04kW of continuous output — enough to run an electric shower or a heat pump and the rest of the house from the battery at once — along with a 185A motor-start rating for heavy loads. That full output is subject to G99 approval from the network operator (without it, units are limited to a 3.68kW default), which is paperwork we submit for you as part of the install.
It suits larger and busier households best: homes with an EV or two, electric showers, a heat pump, or simply heavy evening usage that a smaller battery cannot keep up with. It is a premium product at a premium price — if your budget or usage points to a smaller system, we also install Fox ESS, EcoFlow and Sigenergy systems and will give you an honest steer on which fits your home rather than a one-brand pitch.
Two honest caveats before you fall for the spec sheet. First, backup power in an outage is not included as standard — it needs the Tesla Backup Gateway 2, an extra piece of hardware that disconnects your home from the grid and switches to battery power automatically. Second, the UK unit is single-phase 230V, so on the rare three-phase property it sits on one phase. We cover both at the survey so there are no surprises on the quote.

With new solar: because the hybrid inverter is built in, a new solar panel installation connects directly to the Powerwall 3's three MPPT inputs — one clean install, no separate inverter to buy, maintain or eventually replace. Panels charge the battery through the day; the battery runs the house through the evening peak.
With existing solar: the Powerwall 3 also works AC-coupled alongside your current solar inverter, charging from AC at up to 5kW.
