Solar Panel Grants & 0% VAT Explained (2026 Update)

Amppro Electrical

Everything you need to know about solar panel grants, 0% VAT, and financial incentives in the UK in 2026.

The financial incentives for solar panels in the UK in 2026 are the best they have ever been. While the old Feed-in Tariff closed to new applicants in 2019, a combination of 0% VAT, the Smart Export Guarantee, and targeted grant schemes means there has rarely been a better time to invest in solar energy.

0% VAT on Solar Panels

The most significant financial incentive for most homeowners is the zero-rate VAT on residential solar panel installations. Since April 2022, all residential solar panel installations in the UK have attracted 0% VAT, reducing the cost by 20% compared to previous rates.

This applies to solar photovoltaic panels, battery storage systems installed with or alongside solar panels, inverters, mounting systems and hardware, and installation labour.

The 0% rate applies regardless of your income, property type, or location. It is automatic — your installer should not charge you VAT on any of the above items.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

The Smart Export Guarantee replaced the old Feed-in Tariff export payments and requires all energy suppliers with 150,000 or more domestic customers to offer a tariff that pays you for electricity you export to the National Grid.

SEG rates vary significantly between suppliers. In 2026, the best rates available include Octopus Energy at up to 15p per kWh on their Outgoing Octopus tariff, Eon Next at 7.5p, and British Gas at 5.5p. The lowest rates sit around 4p per kWh.

To qualify for SEG payments, your installation must be MCS certified and you must have a smart meter. Your installer handles MCS certification as part of the installation process. Switching to the best SEG tariff once your system is live is straightforward and can add £100 or more per year to your earnings.

ECO4 and Means-Tested Support

The ECO4 scheme (Energy Company Obligation 4) provides government-funded energy efficiency improvements — including, in some cases, solar panels — to households that qualify on means-tested grounds. Qualifying criteria include receiving certain benefits, having a low EPC rating, and living in a property that requires energy efficiency improvements.

ECO4 support for solar panels is limited and subject to availability. We can advise during your survey whether your property and circumstances might qualify.

Council and Local Authority Schemes

Some local authorities run their own solar panel grant schemes or low-interest loan programmes. Doncaster Council, Sheffield Council, and other Yorkshire authorities have at various times offered or facilitated support for renewable energy installations. The best way to identify current local support is to check your local council website.

Is Now the Right Time?

With 0% VAT locked in, SEG rates competitive, and electricity prices elevated, 2026 is an excellent time to invest in solar. The key question is not whether solar will pay — it almost certainly will over a 25-year system lifetime — but how to maximise the return through the right system size, battery storage, and SEG tariff selection.
