A straight-talking 2026 guide to home EV charger grants, costs and installation across Doncaster and South Yorkshire — who really qualifies for the £500 grant, what a 7kW charger costs, and how to charge from your own solar.
If you drive an electric car in Doncaster or anywhere across South Yorkshire, a home charger is the single biggest money-saver you can fit. Charging overnight on a smart tariff costs a fraction of using public rapid chargers, and if you pair a charger with solar you can top up much of your mileage for close to nothing. But there is a lot of confusing and out-of-date information floating around about "free" EV chargers and government grants — so this 2026 guide sets out exactly what help is available, who genuinely qualifies, what a proper installation costs, and the local connection rules that apply here in Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

The 2026 EV chargepoint grant: who actually qualifies
Let's clear up the biggest myth first. There is no "free EV charger" scheme for the average homeowner, and there has not been one since the old Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme closed to house owner-occupiers back in 2022. If a company tells you your charger will be free, be sceptical.
What does exist in 2026 is the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant, now worth up to £500 per socket (increased from £350 on 1 April 2026) — covering 75% of the supply-and-fit cost up to that cap. The catch is eligibility. It is deliberately ring-fenced and is not for standard homeowners living in a single house with their own driveway. You can apply if you are:
- A **renter or tenant** in a flat or a rented house, with private off-street parking and your landlord's permission;
- A **flat owner-occupier** (leaseholder) with a designated parking space;
- A **residential landlord** fitting chargers for tenants (up to 200 sockets a year);
- A household with **on-street parking** meeting the newer eligibility rules.
You must own or lease an eligible EV, use an OZEV-authorised installer (AMP Pro is authorised), and — crucially — you must not have the charger fitted before OZEV emails to confirm your grant. Install first and you lose the money. The OZEV schemes are scheduled to run until 31 March 2027, so if you rent a flat in Doncaster, Sheffield or Rotherham and have been putting it off, this is the window.
For most homeowners reading this: you won't get a grant, but the good news is that installation is more affordable than people assume, and the running-cost savings dwarf any grant anyway.
Honest 2026 costs for a home EV charger
A standard 7kW smart charger, professionally installed, costs £800–£1,200 for a typical job. That covers the unit, cabling, isolation, RCD protection, testing and commissioning. Where a job costs more, it is almost always for one of these reasons:

- A long or awkward cable run from the meter to the parking space;
- A dedicated earth rod is needed for the earthing arrangement;
- Groundworks or a bollard-mounted post because there's no wall by the parking bay.
We survey before we quote and give you a fixed written price — no surprises on the day. A 7kW charger adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour, so most cars are full from empty in a single overnight cheap-rate window.
The real savings: solar, batteries and cheap overnight tariffs
The grant is a nice bonus if you qualify, but the genuine money is in how you charge. Three routes save the most:
1. A smart off-peak tariff. Tariffs such as Intelligent Octopus Go offer a cheap overnight rate — often around a quarter of the daytime price — and a smart charger schedules charging into that window automatically. 2. Charging from your own solar. With [solar panels](/solar-panel-installation/) on the roof, a solar-aware charger diverts surplus daytime generation straight into the car instead of exporting it cheaply. In South Yorkshire's roughly 1,350–1,450 annual sunshine hours, a 4kW array generates about 3,300–3,800 kWh a year — a meaningful chunk of typical EV mileage for free. 3. Adding a home battery. A [battery storage](/battery-storage/) system lets you soak up cheap overnight electricity (or excess solar) and use it to charge the car later, so even winter charging can run on off-peak power.
Because the sun doesn't shine when most people plug in, solar plus a battery is the combination that really moves the needle. A typical 5kWh battery runs £3,500–£4,500 and a 10kWh unit £5,500–£7,500 fitted. And under an MCS install, any surplus you export still earns through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — though be realistic: 2026 SEG rates vary hugely by supplier, from around 1p up to 16p+ per kWh, with E.ON and Octopus among the better-known options. It's a bonus, not the main event.
0% VAT — but not for much longer
One genuine, no-strings saving applies to almost everyone: 0% VAT on domestic solar, battery storage (including standalone batteries retrofitted to an existing system) and related electrical works. That's a straight 20% off compared with the old rate.
This relief is currently legislated to run until 31 March 2027, after which it is due to rise to 5%. There's no application — a qualifying installer simply zero-rates it on the invoice. If you're weighing up solar-plus-charger, doing it before spring 2027 locks in the biggest saving.
DNO rules: Northern Powergrid vs NGED
This is where a lot of "cheap" installers cut corners. Every EV charger, battery and solar system has to respect your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) connection rules, and which DNO you fall under depends on exactly where you live — something that trips people up right across our patch:
- **Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, the Wakefield district and the East Riding** (Thorne, Goole, Selby) sit under **Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire)**.
- **North Nottinghamshire** (Worksop, Retford, Harworth, Mansfield) and **north-east Derbyshire** (Chesterfield, Bolsover), plus much of Lincolnshire, sit under **National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED)** — the old East Midlands network.
The technical rules are the same either way. A device up to 3.68kW per phase (which covers a standard single 7kW charger's demand under managed-charging rules, and small setups) is usually a G98 "notify" — we tell the DNO after connecting. Anything larger, or a bigger battery/solar combination, needs G99 prior approval before energising. A proper installer handles all of this paperwork for you; a cowboy who skips it risks your connection being flagged. We notify or apply to the correct DNO on every job as standard.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a free EV charger? No. There is no free-charger scheme for ordinary homeowners. The OZEV grant (up to £500) only helps renters, flat owners, landlords and some on-street-parking households, and it never covers 100% of the cost.
Do I qualify for the £500 EV grant if I own my house? Almost certainly not, if it's a single family home with its own driveway — owner-occupiers of houses were excluded back in 2022. The grant is for flats, rentals and landlords. Everyone still benefits from 0% VAT, though.
