But what does a home charger actually cost in 2026, and what's involved in getting one fitted properly? Below we walk Yorkshire drivers through the real numbers and the steps a qualified installer takes from survey to certificate.
What does a home EV charger cost?
For a standard 7kW home charger fitted on a typical domestic driveway, expect to pay from around £900 to £1,400 including installation. That's the range most South Yorkshire homes fall into.
Where you land within that range — and whether you go above it — depends on a handful of practical factors:
- **Cable run length** — a charger fitted right next to the consumer unit (fuse box) is cheaper than one at the far end of a long driveway or detached garage
- **The charger model** — tethered (built-in cable) vs untethered (socket), plus brand and smart features
- **Electrical upgrades** — if your consumer unit or earthing arrangement needs work to meet current standards
- **Whether you qualify for the OZEV grant** — renters and flat owners can knock up to **£350** off via the EV Chargepoint Grant
A 7kW unit is the right choice for the vast majority of homes. It adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour, which refills almost any EV overnight. Higher-output 22kW chargers require a three-phase supply that most houses simply don't have, so they're rarely worth chasing for domestic use.
Step one: the load assessment
This is the part homeowners often don't see coming — and it's the part that separates a safe installation from a risky one.
Before fitting anything, a qualified electrician carries out a load assessment (sometimes called a maximum demand calculation). The question being answered is simple: can your home's existing electrical supply comfortably handle a 7kW charger on top of everything else — the oven, shower, immersion heater and so on?
Most UK homes have a single-phase 100A supply, which can usually accommodate a 7kW charger. But not always. If the assessment shows your demand is tight, the answer isn't to refuse the job — it's to fit a charger with load management (also called load balancing). A smart charger with this feature automatically dials its output up or down so the total never exceeds your supply's safe limit. It's a neat, built-in solution that avoids expensive supply upgrades.
This is also why a proper survey matters. An installer who skips the load assessment and just bolts a charger to the wall is taking a shortcut you don't want under your roof.
Step two: DNO notification
Every home charger has to be registered with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) — the company that owns the local power network.
For a 7kW (single-phase, up to 16A) charger this is usually a notification after installation under G98: we let the DNO know what's been fitted. Larger or three-phase installations need G99 approval before the work goes ahead.
Getting the right DNO matters:
- Across **Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield, Barnsley** and most of South, West and East Yorkshire, plus North Lincolnshire, your DNO is **Northern Powergrid**
- For **Worksop, Retford and Mansfield** (north Nottinghamshire), it's **National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED)**
- Around **Chesterfield, Bolsover** and into Derbyshire, it's also **NGED**
