Who Is My DNO? Northern Powergrid vs NGED Across South Yorkshire & Beyond

If you're adding an EV charger, fitting solar panels, or upgrading your electrical supply, you'll keep bumping into three letters: DNO. It stands for Distribution Network Operator — the company that owns and runs the physical power lines, substations and cables that carry electricity to your property. It is not your energy supplier. You might buy your electricity from Octopus, EDF or British Gas, but they don't own the wires in your street — your DNO does.

Knowing who your DNO is matters more than most people realise, especially around Doncaster where the boundary between two networks runs close by. Get it wrong and you delay connections, EV charger approvals and solar sign-off.

DNO vs energy supplier — what's the difference?

Think of it like a railway. Your energy supplier is the train company that sells you tickets (your electricity). Your DNO owns the tracks, signals and stations that the trains run on. You can switch supplier freely, but you can't switch DNO — it's determined entirely by where your property is located.

The DNO is who an electrician contacts to:

• Notify or apply for a **new or larger connection** (for example, upgrading your main fuse to support an EV charger or heat pump).
• Register **generation** like solar panels or battery storage.
• Arrange an **earthing arrangement check** or a supply upgrade.

Northern Powergrid vs NGED East Midlands

Here's where local knowledge really counts. The boundary between two major DNOs runs right through the wider Doncaster region, and people regularly get it wrong.

Northern Powergrid is the DNO for:

• **South Yorkshire** — including Doncaster, Armthorpe, Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley.
• **West Yorkshire** — Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and surrounds.
• **North Lincolnshire** — including Scunthorpe.
• Plus the North East of England.

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), East Midlands covers areas that are surprisingly close to Doncaster but on the other side of the boundary, including:

• **North Nottinghamshire** — **Worksop, Retford and Mansfield**.
• **Derbyshire** — including **Chesterfield**.
• **Lincolnshire** — including **Lincoln**.

So a customer in Armthorpe is on Northern Powergrid, but a customer a short drive south in Worksop or Retford is on NGED East Midlands. The networks have different application portals, reference numbers and processes, so the first thing any competent electrician does is confirm which one applies to your exact address. Apply to the wrong DNO and your paperwork goes nowhere.

Why your DNO matters for EV chargers

When you fit a home EV charge point (typically 7kW), your electrician has to consider whether your existing supply can handle the extra load and what notification the DNO requires.

For most single-phase 7kW chargers, the installation is notified to the DNO under the connection notification process — often after the work, depending on your existing main fuse rating and total demand. If your property's load is already high, or you want multiple chargers or a faster unit, the DNO may need to approve the connection in advance and could require a supply upgrade.

• **G99** applies to **larger systems** above the G98 threshold, or where you want to export more. G99 generally requires **DNO approval *before* the system is connected**, and the application is more involved.

Whether you fall under G98 or G99 — and how long approval takes — depends on your system size and which DNO you're under, because each operator runs its own process and timescales. An installer who knows the local boundary will start the right application early so your solar isn't sitting on the roof waiting for sign-off.

Don't rely on guessing from the county name alone. The boundary doesn't follow county lines neatly, which is precisely why north Nottinghamshire and Chesterfield catch people out.
