Battery Storage vs No Battery: Is It Worth the Extra Cost?

Amppro Electrical

A detailed financial analysis of adding battery storage to your solar panels.

Home battery storage is the fastest-growing segment of the residential energy market. But is it actually worth the additional £3,000 to £5,000 cost? Here is an honest financial analysis.

The Core Argument for Battery Storage

Without a battery, surplus solar electricity is exported to the grid for the SEG rate — currently 4p to 15p per kWh. With a battery, that surplus is stored and used in the evening when grid electricity costs 30p or more. The difference per unit — from as little as 4p export to 30p saving — is the fundamental financial case.

Worked Example: With and Without Battery

4kW solar system, no battery: System cost £7,000. Self-consumption 40%, annual benefit £735. Payback: 9.5 years.

4kW solar system + 5kWh battery: System cost £10,500. Self-consumption 75%, annual benefit £919. Payback: 11.4 years.

The battery adds £3,500 to the system cost and extends payback by 1.9 years. However, the annual saving is £184 higher, meaning over a 25-year lifetime the battery generates approximately £4,600 more — a net benefit of approximately £1,100 after accounting for its cost.

Time-of-Use Tariffs Strengthen the Case

With Octopus Go, overnight electricity costs approximately 7p/kWh. A battery charging overnight at 7p and discharging at peak hours at 30p saves 23p per kWh — and this works even without solar panels. For solar owners on time-of-use tariffs, the combination delivers maximum savings.

When Battery Storage Is Definitely Worth It

Battery storage makes the most sense when you are not home during the day (low self-consumption without battery), your SEG rate is poor (4 to 5p), you are on a time-of-use tariff, you have an EV to charge in the evenings, or you value backup power resilience.

Our Recommendation

For most households, battery storage enhances the value of a solar installation and we recommend it — particularly at current electricity prices. Installing simultaneously takes advantage of 0% VAT on both components and lower combined installation costs.

We discuss both options at every survey and provide a clear financial comparison for your specific situation.
