Heat Pump, Solar Panels and Battery Storage: The Triple Win Explained

Amppro Electrical

Heat pumps, solar panels and battery storage are the three pillars of a low-energy home. This guide explains how they work together and what the combined savings look like.

The combination of a heat pump, solar panels and battery storage is emerging as the defining energy setup for homes serious about reducing bills and decarbonising. The three technologies interact in ways that make the combined system significantly more valuable than any one of them alone.

How the Three Technologies Work Together

1. Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight during the day 2. The battery stores excess solar generation the home cannot use immediately 3. The heat pump uses stored battery electricity to run its heating and hot water cycle 4. Any remaining surplus is exported to the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee 5. On low-generation days, the system draws from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff

The result: A home that runs primarily on self-generated electricity for most of the year, with grid dependency concentrated in the cheapest overnight windows.

Heat Pump Electricity Consumption

A typical air-source heat pump for a 3 to 4-bedroom home consumes approximately 4,000 to 9,000 kWh per year of electricity (depending on insulation). Combined with existing household demand of 3,000 to 4,500 kWh, total annual electricity consumption rises to 7,000 to 13,500 kWh.

Solar Sizing for a Heat Pump Home

For a heat pump home, we recommend 6 to 8kWp where the roof allows:

  • **4kWp:** Covers 30 to 50% of total heat pump home demand
  • **6kWp:** Covers 45 to 70% of demand
  • **8kWp:** Covers 60 to 90% in summer, with winter demand met by cheap overnight grid electricity

Battery Sizing for a Heat Pump Home

Heat pumps run intensive cycles early morning and evening — exactly when solar generation is absent or low. A battery bridges this gap.

For a heat pump home with a 6kWp array: - 7.4kWh battery: appropriate for moderate-consumption homes - 10kWh battery: better for larger homes or combined heating and hot water - 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall 3: ideal for high-demand homes — its 11.5kW continuous output handles heat pump, EV and cooking loads simultaneously

Combined System Cost and Savings

Example: 4-bedroom detached in Yorkshire: - 7kWp solar array: £9,500 - 10kWh GivEnergy battery: £6,500 - Zappi 7kW EV charger: £900 - Total: £16,900 at 0% VAT

Estimated annual savings: - Solar self-consumption savings: £1,400 - Battery time-of-use arbitrage: £400 - EV overnight charging saving versus standard rate: £350 - SEG export income: £85 - Total annual benefit: £2,235 - Payback period: approximately 7.5 years

After payback, the system continues delivering approximately £2,235 per year in savings for the remaining 15 to 17 years of the panel warranty — a total return of £33,500 to £38,000 on a £16,900 investment.

Best Tariffs for Heat Pump Homes

Octopus Cosy: Designed specifically for heat pump homes. Extra-cheap 3-hour windows morning and afternoon allow the heat pump to run preferentially during cheap periods.

Octopus Intelligent Flux: High off-peak differential (7p vs 35p). Best combined with a battery for maximum flexibility.

Yorkshire Suitability

Yorkshire homes are well-suited to this combination. The region has significant detached and semi-detached housing stock, reasonable roof space, and winter temperatures rarely below -5°C — meaning air-source heat pumps operate at a favourable efficiency for most of the heating season.

Amppro Electrical installs solar panels, battery storage and EV chargers across South and West Yorkshire. While we do not install the heat pump itself, we work alongside heat pump installers and design our electrical installations with heat pump load in mind. Contact us for a free energy assessment.
