Fuse Board Upgrade: Signs You Need One & What It Costs

Your fuse board — properly called the consumer unit — is the heart of your home's electrical system. It takes the incoming supply and splits it into the circuits that feed your sockets, lights, cooker and shower, while protecting each one against faults and overloads. When it's old, damaged or no longer meets current standards, it stops doing that job properly. This guide walks through the real signs you need a fuse board upgrade, what a modern board actually does, honest costs, and one step too many homeowners skip: testing the wiring before the board is swapped.
What a Consumer Unit Actually Does
Think of the consumer unit as a referee standing between the National Grid and everything plugged into your walls. It does three jobs:
- **Distributes power** to each circuit through individual protective devices.
- **Disconnects automatically** when there's an overload or short circuit (overcurrent protection).
- **Protects against electric shock** through residual current protection — an RCD or RCBO trips in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, for example through a damaged cable or a faulty appliance.
Older boards relied on rewireable fuses (a literal strand of fuse wire) or early MCBs with no shock protection at all. Modern boards under the 18th Edition of BS 7671 are built to a much higher safety standard, and that gap is exactly why upgrades matter.
Clear Signs You Need a Fuse Board Upgrade
Not every old board needs replacing tomorrow — but the following are genuine red flags worth acting on:
- **It still uses rewireable fuses.** If you've ever twisted fuse wire back onto a holder, your board predates modern shock protection. It offers no RCD cover.
- **A wooden or cast-iron back box.** Old boards mounted on wood or with no main switch are well past their service life and don't meet current fire-containment expectations.
- **No RCD protection.** If there's no test button anywhere on the board, circuits feeding sockets and outdoor equipment likely have no protection against electric shock.
- **Frequent tripping or blowing fuses.** Occasional trips are the system doing its job; constant ones usually point to a deeper wiring or appliance fault that needs investigating, not ignoring.
- **Scorch marks, a burning smell, or buzzing.** These are urgent. Switch off if safe and call an electrician — overheating at the board is a fire risk.
- **You're adding load** — an electric shower, a heat pump, or [an EV charger installation](/ev-charger-installation/). New high-demand circuits often need a board with spare capacity and the right protection.
- **An EICR has flagged it.** If a periodic inspection returned a C1 or C2 code against the board, that's a documented reason to upgrade.

Why 18th Edition RCBO Boards Are the Modern Standard
When people picture a consumer unit upgrade, they often imagine a board with one or two RCDs covering banks of circuits. That used to be standard — but it has a flaw. Most new boards also include surge protection (SPD) to guard sensitive electronics against voltage spikes, and a metal enclosure for fire containment as required since the 17th Edition amendment carried into the 18th. A full RCBO board costs more than a basic dual-RCD unit, but the convenience and protection usually justify it.
Why You Should Test the Wiring First
Here's the step that separates a good electrician from a quick-and-cheap one: the wiring behind the board should be tested before — or as part of — the upgrade.
A consumer unit is only as safe as the circuits it protects. If you bolt a sensitive new RCBO board onto old wiring with deteriorated insulation, borrowed neutrals, or poor earthing, two things happen. First, the new RCDs will keep tripping because they're correctly detecting faults the old board simply ignored. Second — and more importantly — you've spent money on a new board without knowing whether the cables feeding it are actually safe.
That's why a reputable electrician will either carry out an [EICR-style inspection and test](/eicr-cost/) first, or include circuit testing within the upgrade and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate on completion. The tests check insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity and earth-fault loop impedance. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England. It must either be carried out by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme (such as NICEIC or NAPIT) who self-certifies and notifies Building Control, or be inspected and certified by the local authority.
