How Many Solar Panels Does a Typical South Yorkshire Home Need?
How many solar panels does a typical Yorkshire home really need? A clear guide to sizing your system by roof space, electricity usage and kWp — with realistic local figures.
"How many solar panels do I actually need?" is one of the questions we get asked most by homeowners across Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. The honest answer is: it depends on three things — your roof, your electricity usage, and your goals. This guide explains how to work it out so you can size a system that fits your home rather than the salesperson's target.

Start with your electricity usage
The single biggest factor is how much electricity you use. Check a recent bill or your in-home display for your annual consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh). As a rough guide:
- **A 1-2 bed home / lower usage:** around 1,800-2,700kWh/year
- **A typical 3-bed family home:** around 2,700-3,500kWh/year
- **A larger 4-5 bed home, or one with an EV or electric heating:** 4,000-6,000kWh+/year
The more you use — and the more of that usage happens during daylight hours — the larger the system that makes sense.
Translating usage into kWp
Solar systems are sized in kWp (kilowatts peak) — the maximum output under ideal conditions. In South Yorkshire, every 1kWp of well-positioned panels generates roughly 850-950kWh per year.
So to broadly match a typical 3-bed home using around 3,300kWh a year, you'd want something in the region of 4kWp — which generates roughly 3,400-3,800kWh annually. You won't use every unit directly (some is generated when you're out), which is exactly why batteries and the Smart Export Guarantee matter — but it gives you the right ballpark.
Here's a simple way to picture it:
- **Modest usage (1-2 bed):** around 3kWp (7-8 panels)
- **Typical 3-bed family home:** around 4kWp (10 panels)
- **Higher usage 4-bed:** around 5kWp (12-13 panels)
- **Large home / EV owner / heat pump:** 6kWp+ (15+ panels)
How many actual panels is that?
Modern domestic solar panels in 2026 are typically rated around 400-450 watts each. That means:
- A **4kWp system** is about **10 panels**
- A **5kWp system** is about **12-13 panels**
- A **6kWp system** is about **14-15 panels**
As panel wattage has crept up over the years, you now need fewer panels for the same output than you would have a few years ago — good news for roofs with limited space.
Will the panels fit on your roof?
This is where roof space becomes the limiting factor. A standard 400-450W panel takes up roughly 1.8m² each. So:
- **10 panels (4kWp)** need around **18-20m²** of usable roof
- **13 panels (5kWp)** need around **23-26m²**
Most three-bed semis and detached homes across South Yorkshire have plenty of room on a single roof slope. Smaller terraces in areas like central Doncaster or Mexborough may have less, in which case a higher-wattage panel or a system split across two slopes can help.
A few things that affect how many panels actually fit:
- **Orientation:** south-facing is ideal; east-west splits work well too and spread generation across the day
- **Pitch:** a typical UK roof pitch of 30-40° is close to optimal
- **Shading:** chimneys, trees and neighbouring buildings reduce output — we assess this on survey
- **Obstructions:** roof windows, vents and aerials all eat into usable space
Don't just max out the roof
It can be tempting to fill every inch of roof, but bigger isn't automatically better. If you install far more than you can use or store, you'll export a lot of cheap electricity rather than offsetting expensive imported units. The sweet spot is sizing the array to your usage, then adding a battery if you want to capture more of your own generation for evening use.

A quick worked example
Say you live in a 3-bed semi in Rotherham using 3,400kWh a year, with a clear south-east-facing roof:
- Target system: around **4kWp**
- Panels: about **10 x 430W panels**
- Roof needed: roughly **18m²** — comfortably available
- Expected generation: around **3,600kWh/year**
- Result: covers a large share of your annual electricity, with surplus exported via SEG or stored in a battery
That's a textbook setup — and a very common one across our patch.
