Do You Need Planning Permission for Solar Panels in Castleford?
Most Castleford homes can have roof-mounted solar without a planning application. Here is how the permitted development rules work, and the few cases where Wakefield Council needs to be involved.
If you're thinking about solar panels in Castleford, the first question is often whether you need to ask Wakefield Council. For most houses in the town, you don't — but the rules have exceptions worth knowing, and they changed in 2026. For prices and how an install works, see our solar panels Castleford page.
The short answer: usually not
Roof-mounted solar on a house is permitted development under Part 14 of Schedule 2 to the General Permitted Development Order. The rules were reorganised by the 2026 amendment order, in force from 27 August 2026. For a house, panels on a pitched roof are permitted as long as they:
- don't protrude more than **0.2 metres** from the roof slope, and
- don't sit higher than the **highest part of the roof**, excluding chimneys.
On a flat roof the limit is 0.6 metres above the highest part of the roof, and wall-mounted panels have their own limits.
Conservation areas in the Wakefield district
Wakefield Council designates conservation areas across the district. In a conservation area, roof-slope panels on a house are still permitted development. The extra restrictions are narrower than many people think:
- panels on a **wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway** are not permitted development, and
- a **flat-roof** array needs an application to the council for **prior approval** before work starts.
An Article 4 Direction can remove permitted development rights on particular streets, so it is worth checking whether one applies to your address.
Listed buildings
Permitted development doesn't apply to a listed house or a building within its curtilage. Solar on a listed building needs listed building consent, and usually a careful design conversation with the council about position and visibility.
Garden and ground-mounted panels
Stand-alone panels in a garden fall under a separate class with their own size and siting limits, including height limits and extra controls in conservation areas. If your roof isn't suitable, it is still often possible — it just needs checking.
Flats, businesses and outbuildings
Blocks of flats and non-domestic buildings have their own rules. If you're a landlord, a business or a farm on the edge of the Five Towns, ask us before assuming the householder rules apply.
The network side
Planning is one half of the paperwork; the other is the network. Castleford is on Northern Powergrid's network, and most home systems connect under G98, with Northern Powergrid notified within 28 days of commissioning. Larger systems above 3.68kW per phase need G99 approval before connection.
What we check for you
At the survey we check your address against Wakefield Council's conservation area and listed building records, confirm whether any Article 4 Direction applies, and tell you in writing whether you need an application. If you do, we prepare the drawings and information the council needs. Ready to start? See our Castleford solar installation page or call 0333 577 5464.
